When replacing batteries for electric forklifts, pay attention to the following issues:
Batteries are one of the most important parts of a forklift truck. The battery assumes the role of storing power, starting the engine, the light system, etc. when the engine is not in operation.
More important than the battery that powers the starter, the ignition system helps start the engine. In addition, it also has the role of providing power in case the load uses a current exceeding the rated current of the generator.
After starting and the engine rpm is large enough, the equipment on the forklift will use the electricity generated from the generator. At the same time, the battery is charged to store energy for later starts.
5 notes when replacing a new battery for a forklift
Most batteries used on forklifts are lead batteries. They are divided into types such as open batteries (water batteries) and closed batteries (also known as dry batteries).
Water-based batteries can be serviced like refilling, while dry-cell batteries are maintenance-free and disposable until they run out of power.
When choosing to buy or replace new batteries for old and new forklifts, vehicle owners should note the following issues:
Capacity of the battery
The first parameter to consider is the capacity of the battery. The capacity is measured in Ah and through that it is possible to know how much power the battery can store. To be more precise, it shows that at a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, the amount of power the battery provides for 20 hours before the voltage in each battery compartment drops to 1.75Volt (V).
Refer to the forklift manual or rely on old batteries. If you need a battery with a larger capacity than the old battery, refer to the instructions of your battery dealer. Because, the maximum capacity depends on the power of the generator and not on the brightness of the lamp.
If the vehicle’s electrical system only needs a voltage of 12V, but using the batteries of heavy trucks with a voltage of 24V will damage the system. Therefore, the correct battery must be selected to provide the right voltage for the vehicle.
Starting current parameters
Next, the measurement of starting current (CA – cranking amps) and cold starting current (CCA – cold cranking amps) are also very important for diesel vehicles.
The ignition system needs a strong starting current to provide enough power for the engine to start. The starter in a diesel engine needs most of the energy to compress the air, causing the air to heat up to be able to ignite the fuel to help the engine start.
The “start-up current” parameter is the maximum amperage the battery can supply for 30 seconds at 0 degrees Celsius, and the voltage of each battery cell remains at least 1 ,2V. The cold start current is determined in a similar way but at -18 degrees and each cell reaches a minimum voltage of 1.5V. The car battery’s cold start current is between 150 and 800 amps.
Battery size
The choice of battery size is also very important. A battery with a high capacity, but with a size that is not suitable for the vehicle, cannot be used. Therefore, you must choose carefully before buying to get the right battery for the location and size of the car.
Brand Selection
Consumers often do not know which manufacturer’s products to use. Most branded batteries have a longer lifespan, so they will be known more than no-name products. However, it will cost more. According to the German technical inspection association (GTÜ), forklift batteries typically have a lifespan of 4-6 years.
Exchange old for new
If you find a suitable battery, ask the salesperson how to exchange the old battery to buy a new one. Because usually stores will collect used batteries. If we bring an old battery, we can make up for it to exchange for a new one.
The salesperson will pour acid in and seal the bottle, let it stabilize for a while and then use it. However, before placing the battery in the vehicle, it should be recharged again with a charging current equal to 1/10 of the battery capacity. Next, just plug in the battery and you’re done.
Notes on battery maintenance and repair
Do not wear rings, bracelets, watches or necklaces near the battery because if you accidentally short-circuit, high currents can flow through and cause you serious burns. Also when removing the battery, always remove the negative or ground wire first. If you then accidentally touch the insulated pole, the power supply cord or the hot wire, the short circuit will not occur.
In the case of battery charging, you need to keep it in a well-ventilated place because the vapors released during this process are very explosive. Do not place ignition sources such as sparks, burning cigarettes near a charging battery because they can explode, splashing the electrolyte solution around.
